After more than three decades of service to the University of Michigan Medical School, Dr. Markel has retired as of December 31, 2023. One of the nation’s leading historians of medicine, Dr. Markel has written numerous books, published hundreds of articles, and received dozens of awards. He served as a chief historical consultant on pandemic preparedness for the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and played a critical role in the development of the public health concept “flattening the curve,” employed with great effect during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through his numerous media appearances and his columns in PBS NewsHour and other outlets, Dr. Markel worked tirelessly to bring academic history to the lay public, and to demonstrate the myriad ways in which medicine intersects with American culture, politics, and everyday life.
We wish the best for Dr. Markel as he embarks on the next chapter in his life, and we look forward to the scholarship he will continue to produce.
