The University of Michigan campus community is wonderfully diverse, but its sheer size can make it difficult for scholars from disparate schools, department, institutes, and centers to connect with one another even when their fields of interest overlap.
To help counter this problem, in the spring of 2022 the Center for the History of Medicine launched its Faculty Affiliates Program. Our vision is is to leverage the work of the Center by attracting academics from across the U-M campus to form an interdisciplinary community engaged in the scholarship of the history and philosophy of medicine and related fields. In short, we hope the Center for the History of Medicine can become the campus locus of research, teaching, and public education in the field.
The goals of the Faculty Affiliates Program are to create deeper engagement amongst scholars in the history and philosophy of medicine, to support the teaching and research of novel topics in the field, to connect Affiliates with a wider scholarly community, to provide limited financial resources to support scholarly efforts of Affiliates, and to promote the field of the history and philosophy of medicine.
Currently, the Center is holding semi-annual meetings of Affiliates, whereby members can present or workshop their research to the group in an informal and friendly setting. As the program matures, we will both expand the roster of members as well as the scope of the program.
If your work focuses on – or even touches on – the history and philosophy of medicine, or if you are simply interested in interacting with scholars in the field, please consider becoming a CHM Faculty Affiliate. The Center would be thrilled to highlight your work, advertise your public programming events, promote your courses, and assist you with your research endeavors and project ideas.
