In his ‘Literatim’ column in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Dr. Markel discussed a youthful Sigmund Freud’s blunder in overlooking a historic scientific discovery while experimenting with cocaine – its anesthetic properties. His colleague, ophthalmology intern Carl Koller, was the first to publish a paper on the drug’s use as an anesthetic.
